This is a long-exposure photograph taken pre-sunrise looking over Dunquin Pier. This long and winding walkway leads to the ferry that connects the mainland to the Blasket Islands.
Historically this ferry was the only way the islands remained connected to the mainland. Food and supplies were transported to those living on the island via boats and those who died on the island were transported back to the mainland because the ground is too rocky to dig.
You can see what looks like a bench as the pathway winds up the cliff side. This was built to match the dimensions of the coffins used at that time so that those carrying the bodies back home could rest before continuing their climb.
